[Community Outreach] MESA Day On-site Engineering Design Competition

On April 30th, 2011, SHPE-SoAz and SHPE-UA sponsored the SHPE MESA Day On-Site engineering design competition.  There are several competitions happening that day, and hundreds of k-12 student participate from all parts of Arizona.  The same event occurs in other cities around the country.

During the on-site engineering design competition, students have to develop a design that meets specifications of the project they're given.  Students are put on teams of four and must design and develop a product within an hour. Their projects are assessed based on the performance criteria given to them, and awards are presented at the conclusion of the ½ day long competition.  The SHPE professional and student chapter members serve as volunteers in the activity during the entire competition. This event was a collaborative effort between the SHPE Southern Arizona Professional Chapter and the University of Arizona Student Chapter.  Take a look at the event pictures below.

MESA Day promotes engineering, science and mathematics through different projects for middle and high school students.
